Depuis 2006, Balnéorient mène une enquête sur le bain collectif en Méditerranée orientale, de l’Antiquité (haute époque hellénistique) à l’époque contemporaine. Ce programme fédératif s’était donné pour but d’étudier les divers aspects d’une pratique sociale dans une région qui n’avait jamais encore été prise comme épicentre d’une réflexion menée à la fois sur le temps long et dans un cadre géographique large.

L’ouvrage présent réunit 63 articles, études de cas et synthèses, accompagnés d’une bibliographie commune. Ils examinent le phénomène balnéaire à l’échelle du Proche-Orient et permettent d’en proposer une vision d’ensemble, ne serait-ce que pour en souligner la complexité et mettre en lumière l’extrême richesse du patrimoine thermal de cette région. L’approche diachronique adoptée permet, en particulier, de proposer une autre lecture de l’histoire du bain collectif, ailleurs présentée comme ponctuée de temps forts, que seraient les époques romaine et ottomane, et jalonnée de moments atones ou de périodes de reculs comme la fin de l’Antiquité ou l’époque contemporaine. Au contraire, le présent ouvrage démontre l’extrême richesse et la diversité du patrimoine balnéaire du Proche-Orient, à toutes les époques et dans toutes les contrées sur lesquelles a porté notre étude.

Since 2006, the Balnéorient team has been studying ancient (from the Early Hellenistic period on) to contemporary collective baths in the Eastern Mediterranean. This federative program aimed at examining the various aspects of this hugely attested social practice in an area that had never been, so far, taken as the focal point of a survey on both the longue durée and this wide geographical context.

The present book includes 63 articles, case studies and syntheses, together with a common bibliography. These examine the bathing phenomenon within the broader Middle Eastern context and allow for a panoramic view of the phenomenon that underlines its complexity and highlights the striking wealth of bath-related heritage in this region. The diachronic approach, in particular, suggests a history of the bathing phenomenon across times that differs from the one which was presented elsewhere as being made of peaks, such as the Roman and Ottoman periods, and stagnant phases or declines, such as the end of Antiquity or the modern era. On the contrary, this book demonstrates the extreme richness and diversity of bath-related heritage of the Middle East, in all periods and in all countries in which we conducted our study.
