Sex Work in Colonial Cairo. Women,Modernity and the Global Economy. Book Launch and Discussion
Biancani Francesca, Bologna University / IFAO-CEDEJ
Drawing upon a wide range of rare primary sources, including documents from court cases, reformist papers, police minutes and letters, Biancani examines the discourses around sex workers in colonial Cairo and shows how prostitution, far from being a marginal activity, played a central role in the history of Egyptian nation-making. By exploring the interdependence of power and marginality, respectability and transgression, Biancani writes sex work and its practitioners back into the history of modern Egypt, at the crossroads between imperialist and nationalist politics.
Biancani discusses her work with Dr Margot Badran, Georgetown University, and author of "Feminists, Islam and Nation: Gender and the Making of Modern Egypt (Princeton, 1995).
