La première partie, rédigée en français par Dominique Bénazeth, dresse l’état de la cartographie du monastère de Baouît élaborée au xxe siècle à partir des fouilles de l’Ifao et introduit le nouveau regard qu’apportent les travaux actuels, menés en association avec le musée du Louvre. Grâce à un plan plus rigoureux et à la prospection géophysique de l’ensemble du kôm (910 × 640 m), la connaissance du site se transforme radicalement.

La seconde partie, rédigée en anglais par Tomasz Herbich, explique cette prospection et détaille les résultats obtenus. D’une part, elle autorise à localiser les monuments anciennement découverts, mais réensablés. D’autre part, elle révèle bien d’autres constructions et donne une vision de l’organisation spatiale du site avec son enceinte, ses monuments, ses places et ses rues, ses zones d’activité. Elle évalue également les territoires détruits. Ce riche apport d’informations est détaillé secteur par secteur.

The first section written in French introduces previous work completed during the first excavations at Bawit, as well as new work undertaken by the Louvre in association with the Ifao. The second part in English explains the methods and results of a magnetic prospecting survey of the entire kom. In addition to identifying the location of most of the ruins already known from the early 20th century excavations, the survey has furthermore located new features, marked the actual extent of the ancient architecture, indicated an industrial area and provided data that will help to evaluate the extent of damage to the mound in general. For almost half of the kom, the magnetic imaging of features is of sufficient clarity to allow for a reconstruction and layout of particular rooms and complexes.
