Initially, the laura of Abū Daraǧ was partially described by A.L. Fontaine in 1956. A more comprehensive study of the site was published in two articles by M. Martin in 1966 and 1971 respectively. Epigraphic documents in the one of the hermitages of the laura was also published in 1973 by J. Jarry. The present article re-examines these past analyses in order to propose different interpretations and add new data to the dossier. This study is primarily based on epigraphic material from the aforementioned hermitage and on the pottery identified nearby, located in the southern part of the complex. The conclusions help to develop a general outline for the development of anchoretic monasticism in the “Mountain of Saint Anthony” during the first millennium.
