Cet ouvrage est fondé sur l’étude d’un corpus de documents, datés de 45 av. J.-C. à 785 apr. J.-C., représentant des monuments d’Alexandrie ou proposant des aperçus de la ville, de ses quartiers et de ses faubourgs. Les diverses images d’un même édifice ou ensemble architectural sont d’abord regroupées et examinées de manière à appréhender l’histoire et l’évolution des constructions, mais aussi les modes de figuration et les conventions iconographiques. Elles sont ensuite mises en rapport avec d’autres sources archéologiques ou littéraires, permettant ainsi l’identification de plusieurs bâtiments ou vues urbaines. L’examen du contexte iconographique dans lequel s’intègrent ces figures d’édifices aboutit à une réflexion sur la valeur symbolique ou évocatrice des images et éclaire leur présence sur les supports correspondants. Enfin, la mise en valeur de ces représentations pour restituer la réalité architecturale offre un reflet suggestif du paysage urbain alexandrin.

This work is based upon the study of a corpus of documents dating from 45 BC to 785 AD that present monuments of Alexandria or general overviews of the town, its districts and suburbs. Different images of the same edifice or architectural ensemble are first gathered together and examined in order to grasp the history and evolution of the constructions, and also the ways of representing and the iconographic conventions. They are then set in relation to other archaeological and literary sources, thus allowing for the identification of several buildings or urban views. The examination of the iconographic context in which these images of buildings are situated leads to considerations of the symbolic or evocative value of the images, and sheds light on their presence in the corresponding media. Lastly, approaching these representations as a means to reproducing an architectural reality proposes a suggestive reflection of Alexandria’s urban landscape.
