Pierre Tallet reçoit la Légion d'honneur

Le 21 octobre 2025, lors d’une cérémonie à la résidence de France, Pierre Tallet a été nommé Chevalier de l'Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur. Entouré de sa famille venue de toute la France et d'ailleurs, Pierre Tallet s’est fait remettre cette distinction par Son Excellence M. Éric Chevallier, ambassadeur de France en Égypte en vertu de ‘son parcours scientifique remarquable, une contribution majeure au développement de la recherche archéologique française en Égypte, ainsi que le rôle central qu’il joue dans le renforcement du dialogue scientifique et culturel entre la France et l’Égypte’.

L’Ifao adresse ses félicitations les plus chaleureuses à son directeur pour cette reconnaissance pleinement méritée !

Signature du contrat pluriannuel de l’Ifao et du ResEFE avec le MESR

Le lundi 15 septembre 2025, s’est tenue au Ministère de l’Enseignement supérieur et de la Recherche, à Paris, une journée consacrée aux Écoles françaises à l’étranger, organisée à l’occasion de la signature des contrats pluriannuels des Écoles françaises et du ResEFE. Placée sous le titre « Les Écoles françaises à l’étranger et les SHS : innovation, partenariats stratégiques et rayonnement international », cette rencontre a réuni les directeurs des cinq Écoles françaises à l’étranger : Véronique Chankowski (École française d’Athènes), Brigitte Marin (École française de Rome), Pierre Tallet (Institut français d’archéologie orientale), Nicolas Fiévé (École française d’Extrême-Orient) et Nancy Berthier (Casa de Velázquez). Les échanges ont mis en lumière la place singulière de ces institutions dans la recherche en sciences humaines et sociales, leur rôle de partenaires privilégiés des milieux académiques locaux et leur contribution au rayonnement international de la recherche française.

La journée s’est terminée par la signature des contrats pluriannuels de chaque Écoles françaises à l'étranger et du Réseau des EFE avec Ministère de l'Enseignement Supérieur.

Visiteurs de marques

Au cours de l’automne 2025, l’Ifao accueilli plusieurs visites de groupes et de personalités dont notament une délégation de sénateurs et de députés en visite officielle en Égypte. Guidés par le directeur et les équipes de l’Institut, les visiteurs ont pu découvrir l’Institut, son histoire, son patrimoine et ses activités sur le terrain et dans le palais Mounira. L’équipe de l’Ifao a pu également faire découvrir l’institut à des groupes de la Société française d’égyptologie et aux associations France-Égypte  et Vielles maisons françaises (VMF).

ENDeM : explorer en ligne les journaux de fouilles de Bernard Bruyère

Parmi les ressources numériques de l’Ifao, le projet ENDeM – Exploration numérique des journaux de fouilles de Deir el-Médina – franchit une nouvelle étape. Mené conjointement par le service des archives et collections, la mission archéologique de Deir el-Médina et la société TEKLIA, il offre désormais un accès structuré aux exceptionnels journaux de fouilles de Bernard Bruyère, rédigés entre 1921 et 1955. Grâce à l’outil ArkIndex, chaque ligne de texte a été numérisée et indexée, chaque illustration repérée, datée et localisée, constituant un corpus exceptionnel pour l’histoire des fouilles et des méthodes archéologiques. Cette plateforme permet aux chercheurs comme au grand public de plonger au cœur des premières campagnes menées sur le site de Deir el-Médina et d’explorer, en ligne, un ensemble documentaire jusque-là difficilement accessible.

Nouvelles des chantiers et des programmes

Treize missions archéologiques ont été menées au cours du premier trimestre de l’année 2025/2026 : celles de Tebtynis, de Kôm Abou Billou, de Plinthine, de Qal‘at Cheikh Hammâm, de Hatnoub, de l’Assassif, de Bahariya, de la TT 33, de Tanis, de Kôm Ombo, de Tell el-Iswid, d’Ermant et de la MAFS. Ces chantiers, répartis entre oasis, sites du Delta, de la vallée du Nil et grandes nécropole, illustrent la diversité des terrains sur lesquels l’Ifao et ses partenaires poursuivent l’étude des sociétés égyptiennes, de l’Antiquité à l’époque tardive.

Parmi les nombreuses et belles découvertes à retenir, il faut signaler les résultats spectaculaires obtenus par la mission de Tanis (Ṣān el-Hagar), dirigée par Frédéric Payraudeau (Sorbonne Université). Lors du nettoyage du sol de la chambre nord du tombeau du roi Osorkon II (XXIIᵉ dynastie), l’équipe a mis au jour plus de deux cents figurines funéraires (ouchebtis) au nom du roi Sheshonq III, découvertes en contexte, à proximité d’un grand sarcophage en granite non inscrit connu de longue date, mais dont le propriétaire restait inconnu.

En visite sur le chantier, le secrétaire général du Conseil suprême des antiquités, le professeur Mohamed Ismail Khaled, a pu découvrir ces trouvailles présentées par l’équipe de fouille et a souligné le caractère exceptionnel de ce lot, le qualifiant de découverte la plus importante des tombes royales de Tanis depuis 1946 (Communiqué du MoTA publié sur Facebook). Les nouvelles données suggèrent en effet que le sarcophage pourrait appartenir à Sheshonq III, ouvrant la voie à de nouvelles recherches sur les modalités de la sépulture royale à Tanis et sur l’histoire mouvementée de ses trésors funéraires.

Au début du nouveau semestre, l’Ifao a réuni l’ensemble de son personnel autour d’un déjeuner de rentrée dans les jardins du palais de Mounira. À cette occasion, le directeur, Pierre Tallet, a souhaité la bienvenue aux nouveaux arrivants, salué le travail des équipes et rappelé les grandes orientations scientifiques et institutionnelles de l’année.

La vie du palais a été rytmé par les événements scientifique organisés au palais Mounira, le 23 septembre 2025, une soirée de conférences a été organisée avec l’ambassade de la République tchèque au Caire consacrée à l’oeuvre et le legs du Jaroslav Černý et à son apport à l’égyptologie, réunissant plusieurs spécialistes.

Les 20 et 21 octobre, le colloque international « SignEt : Signatures and seals. Identification and validation marks in the Medieval Near East » a rassemblé à l’Ifao des chercheurs issus de différentes disciplines pour discuter, dans une perspective comparée, des marques de validation, d’identification et d’authentification dans le Proche-Orient médiéval, précédée d’une conférence inaugurale sur les signatures d’artisans à l’époque mamelouke.

Les 10 et 11 décembre 2025, l’Ifao a enfin accueilli le colloque international « Exploring Reuse: Egypt, Mediterranea and the East », quatrième et dernier volet du programme « Destin d’objet » co-dirigé par Félix Relats Montserrat (Sorbonne Université), Angelos Dalachanis (École française d'Athènes), Mercedes Volait (CNRS, INHA, InVisu). Le programme est une coopération entre quatre ÉFÉ : l’Ifao, l’EFA, l’EFR et l’EFEO. Cette rencontre a proposé, à travers des communications courtes et des discussions collectives, une réflexion diachronique sur les pratiques de remploi d’objets et sur les dynamiques de sacralisation et de désacralisation, de l’Antiquité à l’époque contemporaine, entre Égypte, Méditerranée et Asie de l’Est.

Enseignements et formations

L’Ifao a poursuivi activement sa mission de formation destinée tant aux étudiants qu’aux jeunes chercheurs. Neuf grandes formations et série de cours, aussi variées en thèmes que par leur public cible, ont été organisées au cours de ce trimestre (liste ci-après sous la rubrique formation).

Du 22 au 25 septembre 2025, l’atelier « Islamic Pottery in Egypt », organisé par le laboratoire de céramologie de l’Ifao et sa directrice, Sylvie Marchand, a offert une initiation à la céramique islamique, mêlant présentation chronologique des principales productions, exercices de dessin de la céramique, visite d’un atelier au Fustat et du Musée d’art islamique du Caire. Dans la foulée, la neuvième édition de l’Académie hiératique a réuni à l’Ifao un groupe de jeunes hiératisants autour de l’édition de textes à partir d’ostraca, combinant séances de travail et conférences publiques.

Les 5 et 6 octobre 2025, l’atelier de recherche « Papyrology in dialogue », organisé par Khaled Younes, Ahmad Nakshara, Laura Aguer & Jan Ciglenecki, a été suivi par un atelier pratique de formation de trois jours axé spécifiquement sur la papyrologie documentaire copte.

En coopération avec le département du contrôle des ports du MoTA, l’Ifao a organisé un atelier de formation sur une journée pour une vingtaine de conservateurs et douaniers. La formation a été organisée par Axelle Brémont et Simon Connor.

La deuxième édition de l’atelier de formation « Writing modern history » a commencé sa série de six séances le 3 décembre et se poursuivra jusqu’au printemps prochain. Destinée à de jeunes historiennes et historiens égyptiens travaillant sur l’histoire contemporaine de l’Égypte, la formation est organisée par Dina Bakhoum, Antoinette Ferrand & Amr Khairy.

Parallèlement, le cycle de formation en codicologie et en édition critique des textes offert par le professeur Ayman Fouad Sayyid vient d’achever ses 5 séances au profit d’une trentaine de jeunes chercheurs et étudiants.

En fin d’année, du 14 au 19 décembre 2025, l’Ifao a également accueilli la deuxième édition de l’« Academy of Egyptian Images II: Approach, Analysis, Dissemination ». Cette formation, coordonnée par Axelle Brémont, Simon Connor et Gabriele Pieke, a proposé à un groupe de quinze participants, pour la deuxième année consécutive, une initiation approfondie aux méthodes d’analyse des images égyptiennes et aux outils de diffusion des résultats, en alternant études de cas et discussions collectives.

En même temps, les ‘Cours de l’Ifao’ consacré à l’histoire de l’Égypte et ouverte au grand public intéressé, ont débuté fin septembre comme chaque année et se poursuivront sur douze séances jusqu’à mai 2026. Le thème de cette année est ‘La religion hors les murs. Religions et piété populaire en Égypte ancienne.’

La restauration du second niveau du grand hall de l’escalier a été menée à bien, permettant de retrouver la cohérence architecturale et décorative de cet espace central du palais ainsi que l’ensemble des appliques métalliques du palais.  Enfin, les travaux d’étanchéité du palais se poursuivent, la mise en œuvre de l’isolant thermique et la protection lourde est en cours, étape essentielle pour assurer la pérennité du bâtiment et améliorer ses performances énergétiques.

La construction du bâtiment Serge Sauneron a également débuté. Soucieux de préserver l’identité du site, en particulier les arbres remarquables qui en constituent un élément fort, l’Ifao a engagé l’entreprise CONSERV pour préparer ces derniers en vue de leur transplantation et de leur intégration dans le bâtiment.

Historien et spécialiste de la papyrologie arabe, Dr. Khaled Youness est nommé, en septembre, collaborateur scientifique de l’Ifao. Il nous fait le plaisir de répondre à quelques questions.

Vous êtes devenu collaborateur scientifique de l’Ifao cette année, pourriez-vous vous présenter en quelques mots ?

Je suis professeur d’histoire et de civilisation islamiques à la Faculté de tourisme et d’hôtellerie de l’Université de Sadat City, en Égypte, et collaborateur scientifique à l’Ifao. Originaire de la région du Delta, à Menoufiya, j’ai grandi dans un village très attaché au savoir, ce qui a nourri très tôt mon goût pour l’histoire. Après des études en guidage touristique, j’ai orienté ma carrière vers l’histoire islamique et les documents, jusqu’à obtenir un doctorat à l’université de Leyde sur les lettres en arabe sur papyrus dans l’Égypte des débuts de l’islam, puis mon habilitation au professorat, en poursuivant toujours le même fil conducteur : comprendre la vie quotidienne des sociétés médiévales à travers leurs écrits.

La papyrologie est une discipline très spécialisée. Comment y êtes-vous venu ?

Mon intérêt pour la papyrologie est né de ma fascination pour les documents comme sources directes de l’histoire sociale. Au début de ma carrière universitaire, je me suis spécialisé dans l’histoire islamique, puis j’ai découvert les papyrus arabes lors de mon master, ce qui m’a ouvert un champ de recherche entièrement nouveau. Mon doctorat à Leyde, au sein du projet ERC « The Formation of Islam: The View from Below », sous la direction de Petra Sijpesteijn, a été décisif : travailler sur des lettres privées et des documents administratifs m’a montré à quel point ces fragments pouvaient faire entendre la voix de personnes ordinaires, bien au-delà des grandes chroniques historiques. Depuis, la papyrologie est devenue le cœur de mon activité scientifique.

Dans votre travail sur les papyrus arabes, vous avez certainement croisé des cas singuliers, amusante peût être. Pourriez-vous partager l’une de ces surprises avec nos lecteurs ?

Dans le cadre de mon projet de catalogage des papyrus arabes de l’Ifao, destiné à rendre cette collection plus accessible aux chercheurs, on m’a remis un jour une vieille boîte en fer, une ancienne boîte de confiseries, remplie d’enveloppes envoyées à l’Ifao par la poste depuis le site d’Edfou il y a près d’un siècle. À l’intérieur, des centaines de minuscules fragments de papyrus et de papier, dans un état si chaotique qu’on aurait presque envie d’une baguette magique pour les reconstituer. Parmi ces pièces, un petit rouleau de papyrus a retenu mon attention : après un nettoyage et une restauration délicats, il s’est révélé être une amulette portant quelques versets du Coran, probablement portée autour du cou en guise de protection par un habitant d’Edfou il y a plus de mille ans. Nous ne saurons jamais à qui elle appartenait, mais ce petit objet rappelle de manière très intime comment les croyances, les peurs et les espoirs du passé se matérialisent dans ces fragments.

Pouvez-vous nous parler de vos projets de recherche à l’Institut ?

À l’Ifao, je travaille actuellement sur plusieurs projets complémentaires autour de la documentation arabe ancienne. Avec mon collègue Soubhy Bouderbala, je prépare l’édition d’un corpus de papyrus arabes de Fustat, centré sur les aspects sociaux, administratifs et économiques de l’Égypte des premiers siècles de l’islam, ainsi qu’un ensemble d’ostraca arabes provenant du même site. Je mène en parallèle un travail de catalogage systématique des papyrus arabes conservés à l’Ifao, afin d’en améliorer la description et de faciliter leur consultation pour de futures éditions.

S’intégrer à la communauté de l’Ifao m’ouvre aussi beaucoup de possibilités pour organiser des rencontres scientifiques au sein de l’institut. Par exemple, j’ai eu le plaisir d’animer, entre 2023 et 2025, un séminaire mensuel de papyrologie arabe à l’Ifao, et j’ai co-organisé ce trimestre, avec Laura Aguer et Ahmad Nakshara, le séminaire « Papyrology in Dialogue », qui réunit pour la première fois de manière régulière des spécialistes de papyrus grecs, coptes et arabes autour de problématiques communes.

The past semester was marked by a series of prestigious visits and major scientific events. The highlight was the reception of the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, on 7 April during his official visit to Egypt, which took place from 6 to 8 April  2025.

 The President of the Republic and his accompanying delegation, which included several ministers, notably Philippe Baptiste, Minister of Higher Education and Research, and the directors of numerous French scientific and cultural institutions, spent many hours at the Mounira Palace. They were all able to appreciate the contribution of the IFAO to the knowledge of Egyptian history, as well as the dynamics of openness and exchange that guide our activity.

 Guided by the director of the IFAO, Pierre Tallet, and the director of studies, Abbès Zouache, the President of the Republic and the delegation were able to discover the various departments of the IFAO and the richness they hold. One of the highlights of the visit was the presentation of the collections of objects and works preserved at the IFAO, including figural ostraca from Deir el-Medina, a 17th-century Coptic-Arabic Bible, and the volumes of plates from the imperial edition of the “Description de l’Égypte” book. The visit ended at the Press Museum, where Hani Moawad gave a demonstration of how the first printing machines used by the IFAO worked.

The IFAO also had the honor of welcoming Youssef Boutros Ghali, President of the Coptic Archaeological Society, thereby strengthening the ongoing dialogue with institutions dedicated to the study of Egypt’s multilayered past.

Among the highlights of the semester were two major public lectures held at the IFAO, which drew large audiences. The first, on 8 April, was delivered by Professor Zahi Hawass in the grand hall, as part of the 2025 archaeometry Meetings: a day organized by IFAO’s archaeometry division in partnership with the MoTA. The second major lecture was given by Professor John Darnell in the gardens of the IFAO on 7 May, and focused on the earliest hieroglyphic inscriptions of Elkab.

On the academic front, the IFAO hosted several conferences this semester, bringing together researchers from various backgrounds, including, on April 15 and 16, the international conference "Orientalists and the Genesis of Arabic Epigraphy (19th - early 20th century)", and on June 18 and 19, the fifth edition of the RIWAQ Academy for young researchers, entitled "Studies on the Ottoman Period: Architecture and Arts".

On June 12, the IFAO organized a special event, curated by G. Eschenbrenner Diemer, J. Auber de Lapierre, and K. Tawfik, dedicated to the study of wood in Egypt. "Beyond the Tree. A Journey into the Traditions of Egyptian Woodcraft" began with a study day, continued with an exhibition of photos and paintings, and ended with a concert of traditional Egyptian music.

In addition, the Institute launched a new lecture series entitled “Cities Seminar”, organized by Dr. Rehab el-Saidi, focusing on the urban landscapes of the Nile Valley across time. The series began with a lecture by Fathi Saleh, former director of the Center for Documentation of Cultural and Natural Heritage (CULTNAT) from 2000 to 2010.

The IFAO also had the honor of hosting the annual meeting of the International Association of Egyptologists (IAE), further confirming its role as a global center of reference in Egyptology.

A new digital platform available to all!

ArchiSowar

Continuing its commitment to making its resources accessible to the scientific community, the IFAO's Archives and Collections Department is opening its online iconographic database "Archi-Sowar", and making available to the public its database which already contains more than 50,000 images from excavations and work carried out in Egypt since its creation. Each image is accompanied by metadata providing information on both the archive document itself and its content, as well as a DOI (Digital Object Identifier), which guarantees unique identification and standardised citation in academic publications. They are all freely downloadable in high definition for scientific use. Currently available in French, this resource will soon be available in English, and then in Arabic, in order to further expand its audience and promote the dissemination of knowledge on an international scale.

Archaeological sites and programmes news

Fifteen archaeological missions were carried out in the second half of the year: those of the Eastern Desert, Ayn Soukhna, Balat, the Cairo Citadel, Islamic funerary stelae, the Osirian Sanctuaries of Karnak, Ouadi Sannour, Médamoud, Baouît, Coptos, Ouadi el-Jarf, Gebel el-Zeit, Philadelphia and Bouto. The Deir el-Medina, Dendara epigraphy and TT 33 missions had to be cancelled.

Among the many fine discoveries is that of a statue head from the late Ptolemaic period on the north coast near Alexandria by the French IFAO mission to Taposiris Magna and Plinthine (IFAO, Hisoma, ULB, ASM Montpellier), a mission co-directed by Bérangère Redon and Joachim Le Bomin. Two new videos of the IFAO archaeological missions have been published this semester. The daily life at the IFAO is not just about the day-to-day tasks and duties: it's also about sharing and getting together with other members of the team. Lunch, now served in the gardens, is one of the most important of these daily moments. A new pergola has been built in front of the new kitchen as an extension of the gardens, providing shade and comfort for meals and informal gatherings. At the same time, a new chef, Justina Valoris, joined the kitchen team in January to offer staff more culinary diversity and ensure more balanced meals. The menu for the week is sent to staff at the beginning of the week, and a lighter 'fresh menu' is available on reservation. The results are impressive, with the restaurant breaking all records.

The Iftar during the month of Ramadan in March and the traditional annual garden party were also two of the highlights of the year. Organised earlier than usual, on 15 May, this year's garden party provided a festive setting for IFAO staff, researchers and friends, while avoiding the heat of June.

Proposed new salary grid for staff governed by local law

Management presented a new pay grid at a general meeting of all staff on Wednesday 4 June. The aim of the project is to put in place a tool to guarantee a more fair and more transparent compensation policy, which should value skills and know-how while providing prospects and a vision of career development within the IFAO. A second meeting was organised by staff representatives on Wednesday 11 June to answer the various questions raised by staff on this subject.

Education and training

In addition to the traditional "Cours de l'Ifao", a series of courses on the history of Egypt given by IFAO researchers and open to all, for the second year running the IFAO has offered the French community in Cairo a series of introductory courses on hieroglyphic writing given by Marion Claude and Mathilde Prévost. An advanced level is provided by Pierre Tallet specifically for those who took this course last year and wish to continue.

 During this semester, the IFAO organized several training activities with its partners. In particular, the Institute hosted a meeting, coordinated by Naglaa Hamdi, head of scientific translation in the humanities and social sciences, bringing together a group of French and foreign institutions, including the IFAO and Saint Joseph University in Beirut, to discuss translation into and from Arabic. A workshop focused on research methodology was also organized by Khaled Younes and held at Sadat City University in April.

In addition to these long-term training courses, a new seminar has been added, organised by Antoinette Ferrand (Scientific member, historian) and Amr Khairy (historian, IFAO-CEDEJ) in Arabic: "Writing Modern History", aimed at Egyptian master's and doctoral students in modern and contemporary history and designed to train them in the reading and critical interpretation of their sources.

Restoration work

Following on from the work carried out in 2023 on the main hall of the Mounira Palace, renovation work on the mezzanine landing and the library hall began on the first of June and is scheduled to last until 30 September, 2025. The work will cover the walls, ceilings, arches and doors. Dust, noise and disrupted traffic in the Palais are preparing us for the start of the major construction work on the new library in September.

Marianne Refaat, deputy head of the IFAO library, will mark two decades of service to the “beating heart of the IFAO” next year. We asked her a few questions:

Can you tell us about your arrival at the Institute and your first steps in the world of libraries?

I graduated from the Faculty of Arts (French Department) at Cairo University in 2005, then I started a job at the “Amis du Livre” bookstore. But just 40 days later, I applied for a position at the IFAO after seeing an announcement in the newspaper.
I didn’t expect to be chosen, given my lack of experience in libraries, but to my surprise, I was selected. I was fortunate to begin under the guidance of Vanessa Desclaux, the library director at the time. She welcomed me, trained me, and taught me almost everything I know about running a university research library.

Afterward, I worked under the direction of several heads of the library: Philippe Chevrant, Agnès Macquin, and currently Aurore Ciavatti who each helped me acquire new skills.
When I joined, there were only two of us in the team, but today, the library staff includes seven permanent members, along with interns who assist with the workload while gaining hands-on training.

Library work really appealed to me from the moment I set foot in the IFAO library. So I decided to make it my career. In order to adapt to the job and develop and validate my skills, I took several courses and training courses, notably at BnF, Cairo University and Enssib-Université Senghor. As a result, I obtained my diploma in library management in 2014, and my diploma in Information and Library Sciences (DUSIB) in 2023.

The library has undergone major changes in recent years. Can you tell us more?

That's true. The biggest one I can think of is the integration of the IFAO library into the 'SUDOC' union catalogue of French university libraries in 2013. Since then, I have been the cataloguing correspondent for IFAO. Along with the team, we provide the link with this database by entering the records for works acquired by the IFAO, indicating their presence in our library. My colleagues and I also catalogue more than 1,000 works a year in the library's SUDOC holdings.

Another notable development is the migration of our own local catalogue, which began in 2017. After a great deal of thought and several trials, we succeeded in implementing the library's new catalogue in 2024, switching from the proprietary Aleph software (Ex Libris) to the open source KOHA software. Now suitable for all types of screen (computers, smartphones), the new interface offers users personalised, intuitive and dynamic functions: an interface available in three languages (French, Arabic, English), more accessible to all; a high-performance, modernised search tool, enabling thematic, chronological or authority-based searches (authors, archaeological sites, subjects, etc.); and a simplified, aesthetic and dynamic results page.

The long-anticipated new library is finally becoming a reality. How do you feel about it, and what will it change for users and staff?

 I won't go over the many organizational and security challenges posed by the current library, to which we are all, of course, very attached. It goes without saying that the entire library team would have preferred to remain in the heart of the palace. We are attached to these spaces... However, the new library should represent a sustainable solution. In addition, it has many advantages. For example, it should ensure the expansion of the collections in the future, accommodate a larger audience, including people with reduced mobility, and install more accessible and secure shelving. I hope that this project will deliver on all its promises.
