The University of Vienna's Institute for Egyptology has been working in the necropolis at el-Sheikh Fadl (el-Minya governorate) since 2014. The site was probably a main cemetery for the urban centers and capitals of the 17th and 18th Upper Egyptian nomes. Although the archaeological site is severely looted, the mission was able to secure important new data through modern excavations and documentation that allow for significant insights into this region's archaeology and history. Of special interest is the chronology of occupation that we can now trace back to the Late Period (27th Dynasty-31st Dynasty), which opens up interesting new questions about the area's significance during this little known period. The mission has also been engaged with the excavation of a particular tomb that was previously discovered by Flinders Petrie and that exhibits a long Aramaic inscription telling of the Egyptian hero Inaros who fought against the Assyrian occupation of Egypt. This paper will summarize the latest results from five seasons of field work.
