La date de découverte est fournie par Legrain:1906, 40 qui en pl. 41 donne par erreur à ce sphinx le numéro CG 42068. D’après la photographie de fouilles (Azim, Réveillac:2004, II, 271) comme d’après Legrain:1906, 41 (conservation), “l’arrière-train manque”. Il est toutefois présent sur la planche (Legrain:1906, pl. 41) et est visible sur une photographie plus récente: Laboury:1998, 239, Fig. 129 (nous n'avons pu accéder à l'objet en octobre 2010).
Au JE on a deux entrées:
—37840: [sans localisation]/Sphinx de Thotmès III/granit noir/long. 0,35 m/ cf. J. 37981 (double emploi ?) » ;
—37981: [R12 E6]/ Sphinx de Thotmès. K 545/granit noir/long. 0,63 m - haut. 0,35 m / C.G. 42069 = J. 37840 ?? ».
On supposera que la découverte du deuxième fragment a eu lieu approximativement entre le 1/5/1905 (date portée au JE au début de la série de 37840) et le 21/6/1905 (date portée au début de la série de 37941).
Voir encore Laboury:1998, 238, n. 713 qui rapproche toutefois par erreur cet objet de celui photographié in Borchardt, Statuen und Statuetten…, II, 1925, 126 et pl. 98, (CG) 577, dont le nez est brisé.
